The United States has taken an important step in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and established the AI Security Institute Consortium (AISIC) with more than 200 founding members. This initiative aims to promote collaboration among AI creators, users and academics to consider the regulatory and safe development of AI technology. The consortium has the largest testing and evaluation team to date and is focused on establishing the measurement science for the safety and effectiveness of new AI. The move follows recent actions by the U.S. government, including President Joe Biden's unveiling the country's first executive order aimed at creating safeguards for the development and application of AI. The establishment of this advisory group and consortium marks a critical moment in the field of AI in the United States, highlighting a commitment to watermarking AI-generated content to improve security while ensuring AI innovation.

The Biden administration announced the establishment of the American AI Security Society Consortium (AISIC) on Thursday, February 8, 2024, a groundbreaking collaboration that brings together more than 200 stakeholders, including major AI companies. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo revealed the alliance’s membership, which includes industry leaders such as OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Apple, Amazon.com, NVIDIA, Palantir, Intel, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America .

Raimondo emphasized the important role of the U.S. government in setting standards and developing the necessary tools to address the risks posed by AI and realize its potential. Raimondo noted: “The U.S. government plays an important role in setting AI standards and developing the tools we need to mitigate risks and unlock the tremendous potential of AI.”

AISIC is part of the United States AI Security Institute (USAISI) and has diverse members including large enterprises such as BP, Cisco Systems, IBM, HP and Northrop Grumman, as well as leading academic institutions and government agencies. The coalition is tasked with responding to priority actions outlined in President Biden’s October 2023 executive order on AI. This includes developing guidelines for red team testing, capability assessment, risk management, security and confidentiality, and watermarking synthetic content.
